  1. Betrayal at Krondor FREE RELEASE
  2. Version 1.02 Release Notes

  4. IMPORTANT NOTICE
  5. Sierra will not be able to provide direct technical assistance for
  6. the free download version of Betrayal at Krondor.  We do provide common
  7. troubleshooting tips that should correct many issues you may experience
  8. (See the BAKTS document for more information).
  9.  
  10. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
  11. Once you download Betrayal at Krondor, you will need to expand the self
  12. extracting KRONDORZ.EXE file.  To accomplish this, copy the KRONDORZ.EXE
  13. file into your TEMP directory on the hard drive.  Once you have done this,
  14. launch the KRONDORZ.EXE file by double-clicking on it (if you are running
  15. Windows).  If you are running in MS-DOS, you will need to create a
  16. SIERRA\KRONDOR directory on your C drive, copy the KRONDORZ.EXE FILE into
  17. that directory, then run the KRONDORZ.EXE file.  Below is an example of the
  18. steps to follow for MS-DOS installation:
  19.  
  20.     1)  from your C:\ DOS prompt, type: MD SIERRA\KRONDOR <<ENTER>>
  21.     2)  type: COPY C:\TEMP\KRONDORZ.EXE C:\SIERRA\KRONDOR\  <<ENTER>>
  22.     3)  type: CD\ <<ENTER>>
  23.     4)  type: CD\SIERRA\KRONDOR <<ENTER>>
  24.     5)  type: KRONDORZ <<ENTER>>

  26. Now you will be able to install the disk version of Krondor.  Launch the
  27. SETUP program from the directory you just extracted the game files into.
  28.  
  29. The SETUP program will add several icons to your SIERRA program group
  30. or folder.  One icon will add a utility to launch the Krondor Install
  31. program.  You will need to run this utility so you may select the
  32. appropriate SOUND card configuration for the game.  In addition, SETUP
  33. will add an icon for the Krondor game manual file.  The game manual is
  34. provided in a Microsoft Write file format.  NOTE -- the game manual
  35. required Windows 3.1, 3.1.1, or Windows '95 for proper viewing.

  38. GENERAL NOTES
  39. Betrayal at Krondor is a complex game with many intricate subplots. 
  40. When you encounter an important character, or come across an important 
  41. piece of information, you may want to take a few notes. You may also find 
  42. it useful to go back and visit important characters or places more than 
  43. once, as you might receive new information.
  44.  
  45. Some actions could require multiple attempts. For example, you can 
  46. retreat from MOST combat situations, but your odds of success on any 
  47. given turn are less than 50%. Don't be discouraged if your first try 
  48. fails, subsequent attempts could provide different results.
  49.  
  50. To improve performance on some systems, it helps to load a disk caching 
  51. utility like Microsoft's SMARTDRV.EXE program. Disk caching utilities 
  52. reduce the number of times a program has to access the hard drive, 
  53. speeding up certain program operations. If you are using a boot disk to 
  54. run Betrayal at Krondor, you may want to add a line to the boot disk 
  55. CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT file that loads such a utility. For full 
  56. instructions on loading the disk caching utility of your choice onto your 
  57. boot disk, please refer to the manufacturer's documentation.  
  58.  
  59. The BOOKMARK option is an excellent way to save your game, but it should 
  60. not be used exclusively, as you will have no backups. (If you accidently 
  61. use this option during a particularly tough point in the game, it is nice 
  62. to have some other games to restore to.)
  63.  
  64. If you have more than 1 Mg of free Expanded Memory, Krondor will use this  
  65. extra memory, thus allowing your game to run faster and smoother. Also, 
  66. if you are playing the game with less than 595,000 bytes of conventional 
  67. memory, some sounds may not be played. This will not affect gameplay. You 
  68. can free up enough memory to play the sounds by creating a boot disk. 
  69. Re-run the install program from the Krondor directory on your hard drive 
  70. and select the "Make Bootable Floppy" option.
  71.  
  72. Do not allow ALL your characters to become incapacitated or "frozen" 
  73. during combat. Even though they are not "down," if none of your 
  74. characters can move, the enemy will sweep in and kill them, thus ending 
  75. the game.

  78. STACKER
  79. We have found that Betrayal of Krondor works best with Stacker if you 
  80. remove the /EMS or /UM switch from your CONFIG.SYS file (on your boot 
  81. disk only). You will want to remove these switches so your computer will 
  82. not cache to Expanded Memory, or to Upper Memory. (Consult your DOS or 
  83. Stacker manual for more information on editing this file.)

  86. DOS 6.0 AND DOUBLESPACE
  87. For DOS 6.0 and Doublspace users, you may want to redirect Krondor's 
  88. TEMP.GAM file to your UNCOMPRESSED drive. To do this, go to the Krondor 
  89. directory and load the "RESOURCE.CFG" file using a text editor or word 
  90. processor. Then add the following line:  TEMPDRIVE = H:\  (Note: If 
  91. your uncompressed drive uses a different drive designation, replace the 
  92. "H" in the line above with the correct drive letter.)

  95.                      MANUAL INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS 
  96. Sierra On-Line's Technical Support department prepared the following
  97. instructions as an added service to our customers. PLEASE NOTE: NEITHER
  98. SIERRA NOR DYNAMIX MAKE ANY CLAIMS, GUARANTEES, AND/OR PROMISES THAT THE
  99. FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS WILL WORK ON ANY AND/OR ALL COMPUTER SYSTEMS.
  100.  
  101. If you are experiencing problems with the Betrayal at Krondor INSTALL 
  102. program, the following instructions will allow you to manually copy the 
  103. game to your hard disk drive.
  104.  
  105. NOTE: The following instructions should be used only as a last resort.
  106. Try using a Betrayal at Krondor Boot Disk first. Start the INSTALL 
  107. utility and choose the "Make bootable floppy disk" option. After 
  108. creating the Boot Disk, reboot your computer and run the Betrayal at 
  109. Krondor install program. If the install program continues to fail then 
  110. use these directions to manually copy the program to your computer's 
  111. hard disk drive.
  112.  
  113. 1) Check your hard disk drive to confirm that you have at least 15 Megs 
  114.    of disk space available. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are installing 
  115.    Betrayal at Krondor to a drive using disk compression (i.e. 
  116.    DoubleSpace, Stacker, SuperStor...) you will need at least 30 Megs 
  117.    free prior to installation. Run the "CHKDSK" utility to verify "bytes 
  118.    available on disk".

  120. 2) Create a DYNAMIX directory, and then a KRONDOR subdirectory under
  121.    Dynamix. Copy all the files from each disk into the \DYNAMIX\KRONDOR
  122.    subdirectory.
  123.  
  124. 3) Go to the \DYNAMIX\KRONDOR directory on your hard drive.
  125.  
  126. IMPORTANT: Make sure to include the space period at the end of the next
  127. command.
  128.  
  129. 4) Now type: UNCHUNK RESOURCE.000  .
  130.  
  131. 5) As soon as the RESOURCE file has finished decompressing, delete that
  132.    RESOURCE by typing:
  133.  
  134.    DEL RESOURCE.000
  135.  
  136. 6) Repeat steps 4 and 5 again on RESOURCE.001, through RESOURCE.006 by
  137.    substituting the appropriate resource number extension in the unchunk
  138.    and del statements in steps 4 and 5.
  139.  
  140. NOTE: Be sure to unchunk these resource files in order. If you make a
  141. mistake, or if the unchunked files are in the wrong order, you will need 
  142. to erase all of the files from the \DYNAMIX\KRONDOR directory and all
  143. subdirectories, then follow steps 2 through 5 again.
  144.  
  145. 7) After all resource files have been "unchunked", run the install 
  146.    program from the \DYNAMIX\KRONDOR subdirectory by typing INSTALL at 
  147.    the KRONDOR prompt. Check to confirm that the sound and music 
  148.    settings are correct. Choose "ACCEPT THESE CHOICES" from the options 
  149.    in the program. Follow all the other prompts as they appear.

  151. 8) Exit out of the Install program and try running the Krondor program by
  152.    typing KRONDOR.
  153.
